The Confederate Museum houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Confederate-era artifacts in the United States. Below is a representation of the types of items you will encounter on a visit to the museum. Our collection spans military equipment, personal memorabilia, documents, photographs, flags, and much more — each item a tangible connection to the history of the Civil War era in Charleston and the South.
Collection Highlights
The museum's galleries occupy the upper floor of the historic Market Hall, built in 1841. Visitors move through exhibits organized to present the full scope of the Confederate experience in South Carolina, from the lead-up to the war through its conclusion and the post-war years.
Visiting the Museum
The best way to experience the collection is to visit in person. Photographs — even high-quality ones — cannot replicate the experience of standing before a uniform that was actually worn in the field, a flag that flew over a Confederate fortification, or a letter written by a soldier to his family back home.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM, from March through December. January and February hours are Thursday through Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6–12, and free for children 5 and under. For more information about visiting, see our Location & Hours page.
Photography policy: Personal photography for non-commercial use is permitted throughout the museum. Please avoid flash photography near fragile items. For commercial photography or special research photography needs, please contact us in advance at (843) 723-1541.
